The term Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) comes from the landmark 1998 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Kaiser Permanente. Dr. Rodriguez attributes a great deal of her education and work with ACES through the work of Dr. Nadine Harris Burke, forerunner in the field of ACEs. Dr. Nadine Harris Burke is also our Caifornia Surgeon General. It was the Ted Talk about ACE's by dr. Nadine Harris Burke over five years ago and Dr. Rodriguez's own continued research that motivated her to do her own ACE’s work, healing and she became passionate and committed to treat clients and provide ACEs trainings. Please take time to watch Dr. Nadine Harris Burke’s ACEs Ted Talk. You will receive a copy of the transcript. A description of the 10 categories of adversities in three domains experienced by age 18 years: abuse, neglect, racism, and/or household dysfunction and more will be presented. A child or adolescent who experiences ACEs without the buffering protections of trusted, nurturing, loving caregivers and safe, stable environments can develop a toxic stress response, which can impact brain development, hormone and immune systems, and genetic regulatory systems. ACEs are strongly associated, in a dose-response fashion, with some of the most common and serious health conditions facing our society today, including at least 9 of the 10 leading causes of death in the United States. Identifying a history of trauma in children and adults and responding with trauma-informed care can improve the health and well-being of individuals and families and lower long-term health issues and increased health costs. Learn how to screen for pediatric and adult ACE's (PEARLS). This ACE screening evaluates children and adults for ACEs experienced by age 18 to identify Abuse: physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; neglect: physical and emotional neglect; racism, household dysfunction: parental incarceration, mental illness, substance use, parental separation or divorce, and intimate partner violence and other. Pediatric Screening forms will be provided. You will understand a brief review the Science of ACEs and Toxic Stress; Principles of Trauma Informed care to include Brain Health, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual Health and benefits by integrating Somatic Experiencing, Brain Spotting, Family Strategies and the power of Creative Narratives. I believe it is critical to present the hidden history of systemic racism in our county and its impact on ACE's children and their outcomes. Considering the climate of our country, "Black Lives Matter" and other races facing systemic racism, it is scientifically clear that it contributes greatly to adverse ACE's outcomes. The research and narratives another forerunner has undertaken regarding slavery and systemic racism is Dr. Joy Degruy Leary. Her research has provided solid, reliable data on the Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome theory that explains the etiology of many of the adaptive survival behaviors in African American communities throughout the United States and the Diaspora. It is a condition that exists as a consequence of multigenerational oppression of Africans and their descendants resulting from centuries of chattel slavery. A form of slavery which was predicated on the belief that Black Americans were inherently/genetically inferior to whites. This was then followed by institutionalized racism which continues to perpetuate injury. There are endless hidden history accounts of systemic racism regarding Black American chidlren. I will present two of these real accounts and its generational aspects and impact re: DNA (Trust the USA has hidden endless accounts of systemic racism). The overwhelming stress, anxiety and uncertainty regarding COVID-19 and other major incidents to include death, loss, racism, protests, compounded by the economic fear and distress due to lost wages, employment and financial assets; mass school closures; and necessary physical distancing measures has resulted in an increase of stress-related health conditions.
Successful interventions require very specialized skills and services. A great intervention plan is for SUD client and their loved ones/family is to agree to a six (6) month commitment beginning with the initial intervention and continuum of care services. WE work with the concerned others, provide all instructions and facilitate an intervention so the Identified Addcit enters treatment. Gateway Clinical Interventions is a process built on a foundation of highly trained professionals who are certified and for many, our own successful long-term recovery, compassion love and proven success when working with individuals and their families struggling with addiction and its tsunami impact.
All interventionist are extensively trained, supervised and endorse and or certified. We are one of the most effective and successful intervention program in the county. We have provided SUD/Family Interventions for the past six years. The materials are extensive. Once the presentation is over, please complete the evaluation we will provide and email a CEU Certificate to you. If you prefer a Certificate of Attendance, email us and request one. You are required to attend the enture presentation for either a CEU Certificae or a Certificate of Attendance.
The process we utilize is an integrated approach. We take the best of the best of the most current, relevant and successful intervention processes available and address the individual needs of each person in front of us. We are educated and seasoned in cultural competency and provide best practices when providing intervention services. We do not believe in tricking, bribing, threatening or forcing any one into treatment. This same principal applies for the family of the addict.
Our integrated process interrupts the cycle of repeated disappointment and failure without the stigmas that accompany the disease. We believe in our intervention work because we are committed to the long haul and very family focused. We work diligently to ensure that the entire family is involved by doing their own work and healing. We want to emphasize that as the interventionist our focus is being committed to long-term success for both the addict and the family.
